CAD Wire EDM CNC Mill Process Tooling Parts

Implementation

After designing the die, different sections of the tooling will be created in seperate parts of the shop. Most of the die can be created and assembled using conventional machinery. However, during the last decade technical innovations have changed the way some of the work is being done. Occasionally sections of a die that were fabricated by labor intense methods can now be done by automated machinery.

The image below is an example. This is a section of the die that cuts or blanks out material during the creation of the jalousie clip. This section of the die would have previously been created by grinding smaller sections of tool steel and assembling them together. Today, this same section is created from a single piece of tool steel by cutting away material within the steel with a wire EDM machine.

Other sections of the die may be sent to the CNC mill. An example of the type of job that might be done on the CNC mill would be a complex 3D contour for a form die. In some situations it is more feasible to model a 3D form mathematically and have the CNC controller (computer) reproduce the shape.
